In 2010, according to United States Census Bureau data, the State of Vermont had an estimated total population of 626,000, which is about 0.20 percent of the United States population.  129,000 (20.6 percent) of these residents were under 18 years of age, 406,000 (64.9 percent) were between 18 and 65 years old, and 91,000 (14.5 percent) were over 65 years old.  The median age of Vermont residents was 41.5 years, compared to the median age of 37.2 years for United States residents as a whole.

In 2010, according to the United States Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, the approximately 297,500 non-farm employees in Vermont represented about 47.52 percent of the state population.  54,600 of these non-farm employees worked in the government sector; the remainder worked in the private sector.
