In 2010, according to United States Census Bureau data, the State of Mississippi had an estimated total population of 2,967,000, which is about 0.96 percent of the United States population.  756,000 (25.5 percent) of these residents were under 18 years of age, 1,832,000 (61.7 percent) were between 18 and 65 years old, and 380,000 (12.8 percent) were over 65 years old.  The median age of Mississippi residents was 36.0 years, compared to the median age of 37.2 years for United States residents as a whole.
