In 2010, according to United States Census Bureau data, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania had an estimated total population of 12,702,000, which is about 4.11 percent of the United States population.  2,792,000 (22.0 percent) of these residents were under 18 years of age, 7,951,000 (62.6 percent) were between 18 and 65 years old, and 1,959,000 (15.4 percent) were over 65 years old.  The median age of Pennsylvania residents was 40.1 years, compared to the median age of 37.2 years for United States residents as a whole.

Pennsylvania has a land area of 44,739 square miles, and 0.5 percent of this land area is occupied by National Parks.  According to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, 27.1 percent (7,750,000 acres) of this land area was occupied by about 63,200 farms.  The state has approximately 283.9 residents per square mile.  Pennsylvania also has 1,316 square miles of inland and Great Lakes water areas.  This interactive map of Pennsylvania shows the state's roads and highways, while this map of Pennsylvania and the surrounding region provides a visual perspective on the state's topography.
In 2010, according to the United States Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, the approximately 5,615,500 non-farm employees in Pennsylvania represented about 44.21 percent of the state population.  756,900 of these non-farm employees worked in the government sector; the remainder worked in the private sector.
