In 2010, according to United States Census Bureau data, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania had an estimated total population of 12,702,000, which is about 4.11 percent of the United States population.  2,792,000 (22.0 percent) of these residents were under 18 years of age, 7,951,000 (62.6 percent) were between 18 and 65 years old, and 1,959,000 (15.4 percent) were over 65 years old.  The median age of Pennsylvania residents was 40.1 years, compared to the median age of 37.2 years for United States residents as a whole.

In 2010, according to the United States Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, the approximately 5,615,500 non-farm employees in Pennsylvaniarepresented about 44.21 percent of the state population.  756,900 of these non-farm employees worked in the government sector; the remainder worked in the private sector.
