In 2010, according to United States Census Bureau data, the State of West Virginia had an estimated total population of 1,853,000, which is about 0.60 percent of the United States population.  387,000 (20.9 percent) of these residents were under 18 years of age, 1,169,000 (63.1 percent) were between 18 and 65 years old, and 297,000 (16.0 percent) were over 65 years old.  The median age of West Virginia residents was 41.3 years, compared to the median age of 37.2 years for United States residents as a whole.

West Virginia has a land area of 24,038 square miles, and 0.6 percent of this land area is occupied by National Parks.  According to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, 23.7 percent (3,650,000 acres) of this land area was occupied by about 23,000 farms.  The state has approximately 77.1 residents per square mile.  West Virginia also has 192 square miles of inland water area.  This interactive map of West Virginia shows the state's roads and highways, while this map of West Virginia and the surrounding region provides a visual perspective on the state's topography.
In 2010, according to the United States Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, the approximately 746,100 non-farm employees in West Virginia represented about 40.26 percent of the state population.  152,600 of these non-farm employees worked in the government sector; the remainder worked in the private sector.
