Publishing

The modern publishing industry is responsible for producing much of the written material we encounter on a daily basis, but its beginnings can be traced back to the invention of the printing press in 1450 by Johannes Gutenberg.  The printing press made possible the publication of the first regularly printed newspaper, the Strasburg Relation in 1609, the first book published in America, the Whole Book of Psalmes in 1640, and one of the first American magazines, the General Magazine and Historical Chronicle, For All the British Plantations in America, in 1741.  Publishing has certainly come a long way from these early days, and technology and the Internet have created a noticeable shift away from paper publications to more online formats.  The newspaper, magazine, book, and online sectors of the publishing industry serve various purposes but all work together and utilize the work of editors, writers, and photographers, as well as production and advertising teams.

publishing - magazine layout Editors help to correct and combine the work of writers, photographers, and the advertising and marketing departments into a cohesive piece of media content for the production department.  They work with management to ensure that content and style is consistent with the target market.  Newspaper, magazine, book, and larger online publications employ editors of various types including an editor in chief, general and managing editors, copy editors, and proofreaders.

Writers and authors produce written content for publishing.  Columnists, reporters, news assistants, and bloggers work for newspaper publishers.  Magazine writers include staff writers, contributing editors, freelance writers, and online writers.  Novelists, nonfiction book authors, and children's and young adult book authors write for the book publishing industry.  Content writers and bloggers produce articles for online publications.

Newspaper and magazine publishers employ a photography and design team composed of photo editors, photographers, and page designers.  Photographers snap creative and technical shots and photo editors determine which photos are suitable to run alongside written content.  Page designers are responsible for combining words and visuals in a way that makes the best use of space and is pleasing to the eye.

Production departments work with printing presses to ensure that all of the technical details such as layout and color are correct and printing is completed on a timely basis.  The circulation department is responsible for ensuring that the end product is distributed to stores.  Newspaper, magazine, and book publishers employ production directors, circulation directors, art directors, and book designers as part of the production department.

Newspaper, magazine, and book publishers utilize advertising departments to market their publications.  Advertising and marketing directors, public relations directors, book publicists, and sales representatives are some of the employees who work in advertising and marketing for various sectors of the publishing industry.  Find more information about the publishing industry at the Magazine Publishers of America, Journalism.org, and American Advertising Federation websites.  More information about the printing industry is available on the Printing Industries of America website.
