In 2010, according to United States Census Bureau data, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts had an estimated total population of 6,548,000, which is about 2.12 percent of the United States population.  1,419,000 (21.7 percent) of these residents were under 18 years of age, 4,226,000 (64.5 percent) were between 18 and 65 years old, and 903,000 (13.8 percent) were over 65 years old.  The median age of Massachusetts residents was 39.1 years, compared to the median age of 37.2 years for United States residents as a whole.

In 2010, according to the United States Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, the approximately 3,186,300 non-farm employees in Massachusettsrepresented about 48.66 percent of the state population.  438,100 of these non-farm employees worked in the government sector; the remainder worked in the private sector.
