In 2010, according to United States Census Bureau data, the Commonwealth of Kentucky had an estimated total population of 4,339,000, which is about 1.41 percent of the United States population.  1,023,000 (23.6 percent) of these residents were under 18 years of age, 2,738,000 (63.1 percent) were between 18 and 65 years old, and 578,000 (13.3 percent) were over 65 years old.  The median age of Kentucky residents was 38.1 years, compared to the median age of 37.2 years for United States residents as a whole.

Kentucky has a land area of 39,492 square miles, and 0.4 percent of this land area is occupied by National Parks.  According to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, 55.4 percent (14,000,000 acres) of this land area was occupied by about 85,700 farms.  The state has approximately 109.9 residents per square mile.  Kentucky also has 919 square miles of inland water area.  This interactive map of Kentucky shows the state's roads and highways, while this map of Kentucky and the surrounding region provides a visual perspective on the state's topography.
In 2010, according to the United States Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, the approximately 1,769,800 non-farm employees in Kentucky represented about 40.79 percent of the state population.  331,400 of these non-farm employees worked in the government sector; the remainder worked in the private sector.
